Aphids
What are aphids?
Aphids are common pests that are tiny in size but causes significant problems in our yards and gardens. They are soft-bodied insects that are pear-shaped and have specialized mouthparts that they use to pierce the skin of a plant’s stems, leaves, flowers, or roots to feed on its fluids. Aphids reproduce quickly, live together in large populations, and can cause a lot of crop and plant damage in a short period.

Are aphids dangerous?
Aphids aren’t a danger to people, but they are dangerous to our plants and crops. Below are some reasons aphids shouldn’t be allowed to thrive in our yards.
- As aphids feed, they are capable of transmitting diseases from plant to plant through their saliva.
- Feeding aphids cause plants to look yellowed and unhealthy.
- A large aphid infestation can lead to plant death.
- As aphids feed, they produce honeydew ( a sticky substance) that they leave on the plants they are feeding on. Honeydew is a favorite food of ants and other pests, and it allows a sooty, black fungus to grow on and damage plants.
Why do I have an aphid problem?
There is no big mystery as to why aphids have made themselves at home on your property. Aphids are outdoor pests that will take any opportunity given to them to breed and feed. Any Massachusetts or New Hampshire yard can become overrun with aphids because most of our yards have one or more of the following things that attract aphids; vegetable gardens, fruit trees, flower gardens, or landscaping plants.
Where will I find aphids?
Aphids are mostly outdoor pests. Sometimes they will find their way into our homes on newly purchased potted plants or plants that were outside and brought inside. If you have a problem with aphids in your yard, you will notice the following signs:
- Leaves of plants in your yards curling and turning yellow
- Plants covered in a black sticky substance
- A delay in the production of fruits and flowers
- A large number of tiny aphids clumped on the underside of leaves
- A large number of ants, ladybugs, and other insects in your garden
